Bringing together non-believers
On Saturday 31st, 2015, we converged at Metro Hotel for a unique AIK Session. With the help of Sean Fracek, we invited Dr. Richard Carrier, Dr. Robert Price and David Fitzgerald for a discussion on the mythicism, or historicity and actual existence of the Biblical Jesus Christ. I must at the onset profusely thank the President of the Mythicist Milowkee Association, Sean Fracek who supported me and coordinated the event right from the time I met him at Hilton Hotel in Kenya. You have to really be lucky that merely meeting such a person would lead to an interesting engagement later on in the month. Thanks Sean.
Just so that we understand the profiles of the participants, Dr. Robert Price is an American theologian and writer. He teaches philosophy and religion at the Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary. He is professor of biblical criticism at the Center for Inquiry Institute.
He is the author of a number of books on theology and the historicity of Jesus, including Deconstructing Jesus, The Reason Driven Life , Jesus is Dead , The Case Against the Case for Christ ,The Amazing Colossal Apostle: The Search for the Historical Paul, and Killing History: Jesus in the No-Spin Zone.
Dr. Richard Carrier is an atheist activist, author, frequent public speaker, and blogger. He is a trained historian, with a Ph.D. in ancient history from Columbia University, and he is one of the leading current proponents of the Christ myth theory. He has just published the first peer-reviewed book defending it, On the Historicity of Jesus.
David Fitzgerald is an American author, public speaker, historical researcher, and atheist activist.
David Fitzgerald holds a degree in history from California State University, Fresno and has been actively researching the historicity of Jesus for over ten years. Formerly an associate member of the defunct Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion, Fitzgerald now serves on the boards of the San Francisco Atheists and the San Francisco branch of the Center for Inquiry. He is also the director and founder of the first Atheist Film Festival, as well as San Francisco’s oldest Darwin Day celebration, Evolutionpalooza.
During this historic session, we actually had more Christians attending the session, and it was refreshing to see Wangai Wanjuhi of Christ is the Answer Ministries, amongst others posing question to the participants. A lot of clarifications were made with regard to the historicity of the Biblical Christ. I would like to draw a few conclusions from the discussions. The concept of Jesus Christ is a myth. There is little evidence that he rose from the dead. We have also had similar mythical stories with a similar storyline in the history of mythology (dead, resurrection and the virgin birth). The Bible was clearly a written book. Engagement with historians who have looked at the Bible will tell you that it was a compilation of various texts.
AIK will keep working with the Mythicist Milowkee, Freedom From Religion Foundation, and other atheists associations across the globe in achieving its objectives. I want to therefore extend my appreciation to all those who made it to the event! And thanks to Mythicist Milowkee for organizing this event.
