The Constitution of Kenya and the Supremacy of the Almighty God: Is Atheism Unconstitutional?


The preamble to the Constitution of Kenya begins by stating that the people of Kenya [acknowledge] the supremacy of the Almighty God of all creation; then declares that [Kenyans are] proud of [their] … religious diversity; and closes with the statement GOD BLESS KENYA. A number of issues of may arise from the crafting of this preamble, but I will raise and address two issues in this post. The first question is whether there is any value added to religious communities in Kenya by this preamble; and second question is what this preamble means with regard to atheists in Kenya –especially now that the atheistic movement in Kenya has gained popularity to extent of there being a national president of atheists!
