Bringing together non-believers …
This morning, we submitted our documents to the Deputy Registrar of Societies for the Registration of Atheists In Kenya Society. I do have all the copies. We complied fully with the Societies Act.
The Deputy Registrar of Societies, Mr. Joseph Onyango has declined to register the Atheists In Kenya Society, citing the Preamble of the Kenyan Constitution. I visited their offices today and he told me that the Preamble of our Constitution recognizes the supremacy of God Almighty. We reject this interpretation. The Bill of Rights fully protects Atheists and allows them to form an Association.
We are challenging his decision in a letter written to him by myself as the President of Atheists In Kenya, copied to the Attorney General. We would like Public Officers to be properly educated on matters of interpretation of the Constitution. They should also seek sound legal counsel. This is a setback to the Constitutionalism that we are all striving to achieve.
In one week, we shall move to Court if the Deputy Registrar refused to register Atheists In Kenya as a Society.
