Stop believing in myths …
Are you a Muslim?
Do you live in Eastleigh? Then what the hell really goes on there? Are we breeding religious extremists in that part of Nairobi?
I drove to Eastleigh estate recently. I was taking my Muslim brother, whom i am trying to convert to an Atheist, to visit a friend. As i was driving, i saw young children, aged 6 years to 10 years, boys and girls, on a Sunday afternoon, carrying what seemed to be the Quran. Certainly it was a religious book, because it had Arabic handwriting on the cover. Needless to say, the young girls were in the nikas, and the boys in long white kanzus. When i asked around why all that was happening (i mean i would wish they read novels like Jackie Collins, or Mario Puzo), i was told they were coming from Madras.
What struck me was the reality that Islam is designed to ensure that religious indoctrination ( muslim indoctrination) takes place for these young children, from a very tender age, under the watch of Muslim parents, and with the help of Madras teachers. Young muslim parents ensure that their daughters dress in those nikkas, the men wear the white kanzus, they are forced to learn Arabic — its not right! This is unfair! It is unconstitutional, and against the right of the child to explore the world and choose for himself the faith that he would want to learn.
Why would i take my four year old child, ensure that he learns how to recite the Quran, learn the five goddamn pillars of Islam, force the kid to accept that Muhammed was the last prophet of God and all that? At the age of 5 years, what would this kid challenge? Why impart teachings of Islam, when our kids are barely mature and can not understand the complex history of religion, the basis for Christianity, spread of Islam, Atheism, Budha etc?
I now say to Muslim parents, please please, let your children be free to choose what faith they would want to follow. Exposing them too early to a monotheist perspective of life in the name of Madras is unfair to them. Let them get to 18 years, and make a choice. Don’t take advantage of their ignorance.
